How to Solve Sliding-Car Puzzles: A Strategy Guide for Unblock-Style Games
Sliding-car puzzles look deceptively simple: a red car sits in a crowded parking lot, and all you have to do is slide it out the exit on the right. But the moment you start nudging vehicles at random, the board fights back. Every car you move seems to block two others. The secret is that these puzzles reward planning, not fiddling. Once you learn to read the board and work backward from the exit, you stop shuffling and start solving. This guide gives you a repeatable method you can apply to every level of Gridlock, from the opening 6×6 lots to the tighter boards that show up later.
Start at the exit, not the red car
Beginners look at the red car and ask, "Which way do I want to go?" Experts look at the exit and ask, "What is standing in my way?" This single shift in perspective is the whole game.
The red car lives on one row, and it can only travel left and right along that row. So trace that row from the red car to the exit and find the first vehicle parked in its path. That vehicle is your primary blocker — nothing else matters until it moves. Don't touch anything yet. Just identify it. Everything you do next exists to clear that one car out of the red car's lane.
By anchoring on the exit first, you avoid the classic trap of "making progress" that isn't progress: sliding cars around in the bottom corner while the actual obstruction sits untouched.
Build the dependency chain
Here's the mental model that makes hard boards feel solvable: every blocker is itself blocked by something.
Your primary blocker needs to get out of the red car's row. Since a vehicle only slides along its own axis, a car parked vertically across your row has to move up or down to clear it. Look at where it would need to go. Is that space empty? If yes, great — one move frees your lane. If not, whatever is sitting in that space is your secondary blocker. Now ask the same question of that car: what does it need, and what's in the way?
Keep going and you build a chain:
- The exit is blocked by car A.
- Car A can only clear by moving down, but car B is in the way.
- Car B can only clear by moving left, but car C is in the way.
- Car C has an open lane. It moves freely.
That last link is the key. You've found a vehicle at the end of the chain that can actually move right now. Solve the chain in reverse dependency order — C first, then B, then A — and the red car's row opens up. Complex boards are just longer chains, sometimes with two of them feeding the same jam.
Know which cars can even reach a clear lane
A vehicle can never rotate, lift, or hop. A horizontal car stays horizontal and only shifts left and right; a vertical car only shifts up and down. This constraint is your friend, because it drastically narrows what any given car can do.
Before you plan a move, glance at a car's axis and mentally extend it in both directions. That line is the entire universe of squares that car can ever occupy. If clearing your blocker requires it to end up somewhere off that line, it's the wrong car — no sequence of moves will get it there. This is why trucks (three cells long) are so much more stubborn than cars: they need more empty runway along their axis, and on a packed board that runway rarely exists. Plan your escape routes through the short cars first and treat long trucks as near-fixed walls you route around.
Avoid shuffling; every move should shorten the chain
The difference between a 40-move mess and a 12-move clean solve is discipline. A good move does one of two things: it clears a link in your dependency chain, or it creates the empty space a later link will need. If a move does neither, it's a shuffle — and shuffles are how you drift toward chaos.
Before committing, ask: does this move reduce the number of things standing between the red car and the exit? If you can't answer yes, don't make it. It's completely normal to spend more time staring than sliding. The staring is the solving.
Count your moves and chase par
Gridlock scores you on efficiency — fewer moves means a higher score — so there's a target hiding in every level: the optimal, or par, solution. Treat that as the real puzzle. Anyone can eventually free the red car; the craft is doing it in the fewest slides.
Counting as you go builds intuition fast. When you clear a board in 15 moves and sense it could've been 9, replay it. You'll usually spot a wasted detour where you moved a car out and then had to move it back — a sign you solved a link out of order. Over a few sessions you'll start seeing two- and three-move consequences before you touch anything, which is exactly the skill the harder, larger 7×7 boards demand.
When you're stuck, undo — don't thrash
The worst thing you can do on a jammed board is keep piling on moves hoping it untangles itself. That's how a solvable position turns into a wall. Use undo aggressively. If your last two or three moves didn't shorten a chain, walk them back and re-read the board from the exit. Restart is there for a genuine fresh start when the whole plan was wrong.
Gridlock does give you three hints per level, and each one highlights an optimal move — but lean on them as a teacher, not a crutch. Try to read the board yourself first, form a plan, and only then check a hint to see whether your primary blocker matched the game's. The goal isn't to be handed the answer; it's to make your own reading of the chain reliable enough that you rarely need one.
The habit that carries over
Working backward from the goal, tracing a dependency chain, and refusing to make moves that don't advance it — that mental discipline isn't unique to cars. It's the same muscle you use in Sokoban, where you must think a push ahead so you never shove a box into an unrecoverable corner, or in Flow, where you plan whole routes before committing a single pipe.
